Objective 7
Statement: Improve Safety and Compliance Across All Modes.
Description
RTP 2019–2050: Provide safe, secure, healthy, affordable, and convenient travel choices between the places where people live, work, and play. Take advantage of new technologies to make the transportation system more efficient and accessible.
ConOps–SIS: The majority of fatal or injury crashes occur at or near the intersection. Improving safety at the intersection is related to improving the compliance to traffic safety laws for all modes and recognizing that modes that are capable of causing the most harm are typically vehicular modes. While there are certainly human factors and geometric design factors involved in the safety of an intersection, SIS introduces the technology factors for improving safety. These technologies include vehicle–to–everything (V2X) communications and improved data analytics.
ITS Strategic Plan #7: Create robust, resilient, and safe mobility services, networks, and infrastructure. Mobility services, data, and technologies should be able to address short and longer term potential emergencies and environmental trends. Safety should be part of the conceptualization, design, and performance monitoring of mobility solutions aided through technology.
BSI Standards Emphasis: Smart Practices – Focus on outcomes (B2); Maturity Matrix – Physical Asset Management – Focused management of critical infrastructure; Service Delivery; Futurist Findings: Several futurists discussed the need for mobility infrastructure that is future–proofed.
